What is hypochlorous acid?

Hypochlorous acid is commonly abbreviated as HOCl, reflecting one hydrogen atom, one oxygen atom and one chlorine atom. In water, chlorine chemistry exists in an equilibrium influenced strongly by pH. HOCl is distinct from hypochlorite ion (OCl⁻), although both may contribute to the available chlorine measured in a solution.

Calling HOCl simply “diluted bleach” is misleading. Household bleach is typically based on sodium hypochlorite and is generally formulated at a higher pH. HOCl and hypochlorite are related chlorine species, but their proportions and behaviour in water differ.

HOCl can interact with microbial membranes and important cellular components, disrupting normal function and contributing to microbial inactivation. The practical result depends on the complete product and how it is used—not on the ingredient name alone.

HOCl and the human immune system

Certain white blood cells generate reactive compounds during the immune response. Through enzyme-driven reactions involving chloride and hydrogen peroxide, these cells can produce HOCl as part of their defence against microorganisms.

This biological role helps explain scientific interest in HOCl, but it does not mean every manufactured HOCl product is interchangeable with the substance generated inside the body. Product safety and suitability must be assessed for the intended use and formulation.

How is hypochlorous acid made?

Commercial HOCl solutions can be produced using controlled electrochemical processes. A purified water and chloride-containing feed solution passes through an electrolytic system, creating chlorine species in water. Process control and subsequent formulation determine the final pH, available chlorine profile and product characteristics.
